1sts Win against Stade Lausanne
With the first few GC Rugby players gone to enjoy the Rugby World Cup in Japan and a couple of injuries, selection for this week’s game against Stade Lausanne was slightly more difficult. Nevertheless, it meant that our very own president Josh Bjornson and «Gimli the dwarf» Andrea Bianchi celebrated their comebacks in the starting XV.
The start to the game proved to be difficult as Stade Lausanne scored their first try after only 3 minutes. In their score, special mention goes to Leo Luginbühl who apparently doesn’t like to tackle in cold conditions. However, in style of true champions, it didn’t take long for GC to respond. Good heads-up rugby saw Josh celebrating his return to the starting XV with a try. Zurich was in the game now and after winning the ball back and going through a few phases Jess Roberson scored in the corner to make it 12:7. Lausanne closed the gap with a penalty but tries from Flo Bezard and Yannick Liechti saw Zurich getting the bonus point within the first half.
At half time Zurich led 26:10. Sadly the boys started to lose the focus and a few individual errors began to creep in during the second half which was worsened with Andri Koeferli collecting a yellow card for foul play. It took until the 60th minutes to make it 33:13. Now that the shaky period was over the gates were open and Zurich ran in a few more tries by Leo, Udara, Tim and Jess to complete the match.
In the end Zurich was able to celebrate a convincing 52:13 victory. Once again it showed that the new game plan pays dividends but there is still plenty to work on in training. The next big test for the 1st XV will be against last year’s finalists away in Nyon next Sunday.
