NLA 2018/2019
Sun 10.03.19, 15:00 Hours | Nyon, Centre sportif de Colovray

23 : 21

All four seasons and some extra wind was present on the day where the second half of the season kicked off in Nyon

After a long winter break the Zurich boys were excited to get back on a grass pitch and confront an old foe. The game plan was clear: hold on to the ball and utilise the elements to play in the oppositions half. Unfortunately the game didn’t start as planned and within the first fifteen minutes spent in our half, after a shoddy start Nyon had pulled two tries ahead.

As the sun decided to show itself, Zurich finally began to play in the Nyon half and assert some pressure. Two penalties coolly slotted by our northern mug put GC back on track. We were still not playing the way we wanted: our lack of discipline allowed the megaboot of the Nyon kicker to slot another three. Although we weren’t playing a cohesively, after sustained possession in the Nyon 22 and some very hard work by our ugly forwards, we went over the try-line to make the score 15-11 at halftime without having played well.

The second half also was not played entirely the way we wanted it to, with Nyon making the most of the conditions and pinning us back in our half. In spite of this, a new half back pairing increased the tempo of the Zurich game. Unfortunately, halfway through the second half, a lippy Zurich winger screamed an expletive to which the referee took offense and sent him to stand behind the posts for ten minutes with his head hanging in shame. Some great défense by Zurich with one man down paid off when from our own 22 good combinations sent the GC lads 80m up the field. Quick ball combined with great support allowed our balding substitute ten to stroll through under the posts. GC was ahead!

In the dying minutes of the game, Zurich conceded four penalties allowing Nyon back into our half and assert pressure. In the last minute their fat boys went over the line to win the game in the final minute.

Lots to learn from and look forward to do the next game against the current Champions GePLO.
