Valkyries on Tour in Malta
On a sunny February afternoon the Valkyries set out to the beautiful island of Malta for the annual Malta 7s tournament organized by the Malta Rugby Football Union. The Valkyries are made up of the ladies teams from GC Zürich and the Rugby Club Würenlos. They merged in 2018 to form the new “Würizüri” ladies team. Together on tour for the first time, the ladies competed in two teams against groups from Malta, France, and Switzerland. To the team’s delight, a lot of new players joined the tour and some even made their debut on the pitch in a Valkyries jersey. The Valkyreis entered the tournament with a set of goals, to grow together as a team, have fun and, and play great rugby. And that they did! “It was a way to bring both teams together socially and also to gain experience on the rugby pitch, expecially for those who have never played before. In that sense, the tour was a major success!” says the Valkyries team captain Simi, who passed her captains hat for this tournament to Leonie and Monica. “It was good for me to see that Leonie and Monica step up to take on more responsibility. They did a good job and really grew in that sense as well”. Everyone in this tournament really stepped up, gave it their all, and played some amazing rugby! We really saw people developing in their roles as rugby players, team mates, and leaders. Monica, one of the two teams’ captains on this tour, says “It was an honor to play with such wonderful and motivated grils. Everyone really came together to deliver and support each other”. We couldn’t agree more! We saw new and old players run great lines, land good tackles, and of course score some amazing tries! Although in the end, it was not enough to win the tournament, the ladies left Malta after the weekend feeling satisfied with their efforts on and off the pitch! They had accomplished exactly what they had set out to do.
How it would not be a proper rugby tour without a rugby social and some tour challenges. At these Malta 7s, the combined Valkyries were split into small groups and had to design a fancy dress to wear at the tournament dinner Sunday evening made of only garbage bags! Not only are the Valkyries awesome rugby players, but it seems some are also creative fashion designers! After dinner, the Valkyries and the other participating teams of the Malta 7s headed out to partake in one of Maltas favorite past-times – Karaoke! As a team, they joined in singing Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Hear”, which had become the teams unofficial anthem for this tour. Our second captain Leonie even joined the tournament’s referee and members of Cern’s “Crazy Cooks” to sing a dutch song from their native home. Beautiful voices girls!
Taken together, this tour was a great success for the Valkyries and we want to thank the Malta Rugby Football Union for organizing this international women’s 7s tournamet and hosting us so wonderfully! We had a blast and will surely be back
