44th Neuchâtel 7s – 19-20th of May 2018 – Tournament report

Our club has a long tradition when it comes to this tournament. The oldest Continental European 7s tournament was used to see us coming every year, but in the last years GCZ Rugby didn’t show up. Fortunately we’re back !

Indeed with this year’s participation Zürich did an outstanding come back by its performance on and outside of the pitch.

After a tough start Saturday morning and a loss against a surprising RC Fribourg team, GC won the next games of the day against RC Solothurn and Faktion Bern/Wint and as  the players were still keen on playing rugby, few of them even play few minutes for the London Scottish, before warming up for the Saturday night party.

Sunday morning started even tougher for GC. The team played to qualify for the cup’s ¼ of final against the Midland Hawks. Even though GC scored 2 tries during the first half, letting the Hawks confused, the final score saw the Hawks winning 4tries against 2 for GC. Our boys played more rugby XV than 7s on the second half, letting the other team controlling the rest of the game. One may say that the Hawks also enjoyed a better fitness than GC, as just few of them were seen under the main tent Saturday night. It’s a mindset (see bellow when it comes to rugby spirit).

Nevertheless, GC was still in the game for the 5th rank. They first defeated the French from Champagnole before playing Solothurn for the second time and winning the Plate.

The team proved their rugby skills on the pitch, but definitely outside of it as well as they won the following trophies:

  • Plate winner (5th)
  • Coppa Varese (best rugby spirit)
  • Highland Games  (this year’s theme was Scotland)
  • Fair player to one of our player Yannis
  • And even Jess who was shortlisted as best player of the tournament

This weekend offered lasting memories to our players and GCZ will hopefully come back for the 45th edition, the 8th and 9th June 2019 in Neuchâtel.
