away vs LUC 2

Lausanne UC 2 (12-24) GC Zürich 2

Match report by Anthony Fitze

It was a special rugby Sunday this time as the 20-man squad and a handful of die-hard supporters traveled to Lausanne to challenge for the Swiss Excellence A Title. Spirits were high but the nerves where tense as the team arrived at the lake side pitch. It was now down to the Head Coach to channel that energy into a focused game. After a good warm-up an inspiring speech by Coach Alex, underlined by some Scottish motivation talk form GC-stalwart Robbie, the tonne was set for Kick-Off. An entire season of hard graft was about to peak in this one final clash of the season.

GC2 put on the pressure right from the start and for the first 20 minutes LUC was left wondering what had hit them. GC worked through phase after phase with rare determination. The work paid off as Tim managed to break through and crossed the line for the first points of the game. Unfortunately, Alex must have got something in his eye as the conversion went woefully astray from his otherwise renownedly accurate boot. Nonetheless an early lead to the visitors.

LUC managed to find their feet and ran a couple of dangerous attacks with their backline, but so did GC2. After a brilliant combination, it was Marius who pulled on his speedster boots for a dash down the side which saw him cross the whitewash to score his first try for the club. Congratulations! Gian accurately hit the inside of one of the uprights to score the conversion off the post form a difficult angle, 0-12.

The frustration was visible at the restart as the home team fought to stay in the game. LUC went on the attack, but struggled to get past the GC2 Guard Dogs. The few times they did look dangerous they came away with more casualties than points. Two LUC players had to be subbed in the first half. The strong LUC bench had a positive impact on their game. Nonetheless it was GC2 who scored next. A scrappy lineout by LUC led to a penalty which Alex put safely into touch. A solid lineout was followed by a maul which quickly picked up speed. With even the backs piling in there was no stopping this drive and it was the Diego who scored the third try for GC2. The conversion went wide but with the first half entering the final stage it was looking promising at 0-17.

A brief phase of pressure from LUC saw Christian collect a yellow card for preventing a try 5m from the GC2 line. A sacrifice worth making, however this meant GC would go into the second half a man down. While the boys are more used to a wake-up call from the Coach at half time, this time it was a pat on the back for a strong first half as Alex vowed to improve his kicking in the second 40.

Fortune played into LUCs hands at the start of the second half. With Christian still out Vice Captain Pato was also sent off with a yellow for alleged punching. With only 13 men on the pitch GC2 was unable to maintain the high pace they had set and LUC, never a side to give up early, clawed their way back into the game.

A grinding battle resulted as GC2 was pinned down on their try line with LUC driving at the defense. Although the 13 men managed to hold out until Christians return LUC eventually crashed through to score their first try. A clean conversion saw them catch up to 7-17. The boys took the chance at the restart to get back into a structured game. Just as in the first half the whole team got stuck in, pushing LUC back towards their line. Again, Tim found the gap and crossed for GC2s fourth try. Gian put his winning boot to it claiming his second conversion.

The high intensity began to take its toll and Dom was forced off with concussion. Time for some fresh legs. With Pato back and the subs adding some fresh power, the men saw out wave after wave of LUC attacks as the home team turned on the heat in the final 20min. Their effort was rewarded as they crossed the line for a second try just before the final whistle.

GC2 claimed a hard-fought win and with it the Excellence A Title!! Thanks to all involved it is great to be part of such a team!!

Man of the Match: by GC Sämi and by LUC Tim. Jaffa goes to Alex for poor kicking, although Chris got the beer. ;-)
