Entente Mermigans (10 - 24) Zürich Valkyries (HT 10-12)

Report by Josh Bjornson

The Zurich ladies faced a very motivated and game Nyon team in their final league match of the first half of the season.  With many regular starters unavailable due to injury and other commitments, the team travelled down to Monthey in the club bus with only one substitute and many players in positions they are unfamiliar with.

It was clear early in the match that Nyon weren’t going to concede this game and were making Zurich work very hard for everything.  Zurich went up to an early 0-12 lead from two tries but Nyon fought back to bring the score nerve-wrackingly close with two unconverted tries (12-10), mostly thanks to their skilful number 10.

Two late second-half tries closed out a very tense match that was much closer than the score might indicate.  The bonus winning try came just moments before the final whistle thanks to national team captain Bina Walti.

Nyon have significantly improved since last season, but many new girls stepped up and played extremely well with only a few senior players on the pitch.

Players of the match:

  • Joyce Mills (chosen by the Valkyries)
  • Bina Walti (chosen by the Mermigans)

Tries: Monica Arzani, Muriel Henderson, Bina Walti x 2

Conversions: Simone Haymoz, Joyce Mills
