away vs Avusy
Avusy (11-12) GC Zürich
Match report by Andri Koefli
On a beautiful Saturday morning, we meet as usual for our away games at the Sihlquai bus station. As we travelled down to Avusy, the sun started to go away and the rain and the clouds took over the sky.
We arrived at the pitch in the middle of nowhere and the rain hammered on our heads and we knew today was the day we were either going to win and get closer to our goal of reaching the playoffs or we were going to lose.
After a warm-up and few motivational words from our coach Alex Ramon, we were ready to smash our opposition and take the win back home to Zurich, which proved to be easier said than done.
The ref whistled to start the game and every one of us knew that we didn’t train so hard all year just to come down 3,5 hours from Zurich to Avusy and get smashed. We knew today we were going to kick asses.
After some good phases from our forwards, our 9 Oli passed the ball to our backs who were supported by our Flanker Sylvain de Toulouse. The Ball was gliding through the hands and found his way to Sylvain who made an amazing grubber kick from the half way line down to the try zone which finally landed in the hands of Hugh, who made the try after a 30-meter sprint. After placing the ball in the corner of the try zone he wasn’t able to convert the kick due to a narrow angle.
But a team like Avusy should never be underestimated. They were hungry for a win after their narrow loses to Geneva PLO and Lausanne, and they were ready to do whatever it took to win, even with unfair means. Avusy managed to break our momentum with a lot of aggression in the breakdowns and scuffles off the ball. They soon scored two penalty kicks and a try. We were too passive in support and the result of it was that Avusy took the lead.
That was the time when we knew that we had to score and we needed to make the conversion.
After several Phase in Avusy’s 22’ meter line our huge Center Yannick Staubli managed to go through their defense and placed the ball in their try zone next to the posts, which created a perfect base for our kicker Hugh, who could easily convert the conversion and let us win 12:11. We were so happy to be a step closer to the playoffs and also for the first away win after 2 years.
